Tourists Evacuated As Volcano Erupts During Hike In Guatemala

Volcano erupts during hike in Guatemala, forcing tourists to flee.

Tourists hiking on the slopes of Volcán de Fuego were forced to flee for safety after the volcano erupted unexpectedly, sending burning rocks and volcanic debris into the air. The incident occurred as visitors were exploring the active volcano located about 43 km southwest of Guatemala City, one of the most frequently active volcanic sites in Central America.

According to reports, the eruption caught hikers off guard as glowing fragments of volcanic material began falling along the trails. Video footage shared on social media showed tourists running down steep paths while trying to avoid the falling debris. The sudden eruption created panic on the mountain as visitors scrambled to descend to safer ground.

A video circulated by AccuWeather captured the chaotic scene, with hikers heard shouting in alarm as they rushed away from the eruption zone. Witnesses described moments of confusion as people attempted to protect themselves from hot rocks, with some even stopping briefly to react to debris landing nearby before continuing their descent.

Among those present was hiker Hana Garcia, who described the experience as terrifying. She said a burning rock pierced through her coat and narrowly missed her head. Garcia added that she initially tried to record the eruption but quickly stopped as the situation escalated and she began running for safety. She later described the incident as “unforgettable” and said she was “absolutely terrified.”

Volcán de Fuego is known as one of Guatemala’s most active volcanoes, with frequent small eruptions occurring every 15 to 20 minutes. While many of these events are minor, the volcano has a history of severe activity, including a deadly eruption in 2018 that triggered pyroclastic flows and buried nearby villages, killing more than 100 people.

Following the latest incident, the eruption sparked discussion online, with some users warning about the risks of approaching active volcanic sites, while others expressed relief that no serious injuries were reported among the hikers. Authorities and observers continue to stress caution in high-risk volcanic zones due to the unpredictable nature of eruptions.
