Tornado Warning Issued For Prince George County as Hopewell Remains on Alert

A tornado warning was issued for Prince George County in Virginia on August 14 after the National Weather Service (NWS) reported a radar-confirmed tornado in the area. The warning covered parts of the county near Hopewell, as severe weather moved through the region. The NWS said the warning would remain in effect until 11:15 pm EDT, with residents advised to take shelter and stay away from windows.

Hopewell remained on alert as the storm system produced strong rotation and potentially dangerous conditions. Weather observers monitoring the storm reported that a brief tornado may have touched down east of Hopewell. Maps and radar imagery shared online appeared to show areas affected by the storm, although reports of specific tornado touchdowns were still being assessed.

An atmospheric and oceanic science student tracking the storm said a brief tornado may have occurred east of Hopewell. Another weather observer suggested that a second brief tornado could have occurred near Garysville, close to the intersection of James River Drive and Moody Road. The reports were based on radar signatures and visual observations, and further confirmation would depend on subsequent weather assessments.

Meanwhile, a weather update account reported that a radar-confirmed tornado was moving south at about 20 mph through central Prince George County near Hopewell and toward Disputanta. Storm observers warned of flying debris, roof damage and dangerous winds, particularly for people outdoors and those living in mobile homes. Residents in the warned area were urged to seek shelter immediately if the warning remained active.

The severe weather also generated reports of intense conditions elsewhere in Virginia. Scary visuals emerged from Charlottesville, where one video showed heavy hail during the storm. The reports highlighted the broader impact of the weather system as thunderstorms moved across parts of the state.

Authorities and weather officials continued to monitor the situation as the storm moved through Virginia. Residents in Prince George County and surrounding areas were advised to follow official NWS alerts, remain indoors during active warnings and avoid travelling through areas affected by severe storms. Further assessments would be needed to determine the extent of any tornado damage and confirm reported touchdowns.
