Three Policemen Killed in IED Attack on Patrol Vehicle in Northwest Pakistan

Three policemen were killed on Wednesday when an improvised explosive device (IED) targeted their mobile van in the Panyala area of Dera Ismail Khan district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The deceased have been identified as Assistant Sub-Inspector Gul Alam, Constable Rafiq, and driver Sakhi Jan. The blast occurred in a region bordering the former tribal area of South Waziristan, long considered a hotspot for militant activity.
District police rushed to the scene immediately after the explosion, cordoning off the area and launching a search operation for the perpetrators. Dera Ismail Khan District Police Officer Sajjad Ahmad Sahibzada described the incident as a “cowardly terrorist attack” carried out by unidentified militants. No group has yet claimed responsibility.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Muhammad Sohail Afridi strongly condemned the attack and directed authorities to provide all possible assistance to the families of the martyred officers. Funeral prayers for the slain policemen are expected to be held with full official honours.

The province has witnessed a sharp rise in targeted attacks on security forces since the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) formally ended its ceasefire with the government in November 2022. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and neighbouring Balochistan remain the primary theatres of a resurgent militancy that has claimed hundreds of lives this year alone.
Security analysts note that police mobile units have become frequent targets because they represent visible state authority in remote districts where militants retain influence. Wednesday’s bombing is the latest reminder that, despite large-scale military operations, pockets of northwest Pakistan continue to face serious terrorism challenges. Authorities have vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice.
