Three Indians Rescued From Cyber Scam Centres in Myanmar

Three more Indians safely repatriated from job fraud traps.

Three Indian nationals, lured by deceptive overseas job promises and subsequently ensnared in the infamous cyber scam centres of Myawaddy along the Myanmar-Thailand border, have been successfully repatriated to India following intensive diplomatic negotiations and collaborative operations with Myanmar authorities and rescue organizations.

The Indian Embassy in Yangon announced the safe return of these victims on Thursday via an official statement on X, noting that they were transported out of the scam compounds through Yangon airport, representing a critical victory in the ongoing battle against human trafficking networks that force captives into fraudulent online activities generating billions in illicit revenue.

In the same post, the Embassy issued a vehement advisory to Indian citizens, strongly cautioning against entertaining job offers from unverified international firms—especially those advertising exorbitant salaries for roles in IT, customer support, or data entry in Southeast Asia—which frequently serve as gateways to exploitation, torture, and forced labor in fortified scam facilities.

Since the launch of accelerated repatriation initiatives in July 2024, the Yangon Embassy has coordinated the return of 1,757 Indian nationals from Myanmar alone, with operations involving direct embassy interventions, partnerships with local NGOs, and pressure on Myanmar's military junta to grant access to these heavily guarded scam hubs amid escalating regional crackdowns.

The Indian government's comprehensive response to this crisis was underscored in a parliamentary statement on December 11, 2025, revealing that over 6,700 Indians have been rescued from analogous fraudulent job schemes across Cambodia, Myanmar, and Lao PDR, where organized crime syndicates, often backed by ethnic armed groups, exploit desperate job seekers through fake recruitment agencies operating via social media and shady consultancies.
