Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday thanked U.S. President Donald Trump for acknowledging Pakistan’s pivotal role in counter-terrorism efforts following the arrest of Mohammad Shareefullah, alias “Jafar,” a key Islamic State-Khorasan (ISIS-K) operative. The Afghan national, apprehended by Pakistani security forces in a border operation, was linked to multiple deadly attacks, including the 2021 Abbey Gate bombing at Kabul’s Hamid Karzai International Airport, which killed 13 U.S. service members and scores of Afghan civilians during the chaotic U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan.

In a post on X, Sharif hailed the operation as a testament to Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to combating terrorism. “We thank US President Donald Trump for acknowledging and appreciating Pakistan’s role and support in counter-terrorism efforts across the region,” he wrote, emphasizing that Shareefullah’s capture in the Pakistan-Afghanistan border region underscored the country’s resolve to deny terrorists safe havens. Sharif reiterated Pakistan’s longstanding sacrifices, noting the loss of over 80,000 lives, including soldiers and civilians, in the fight against militancy.

Trump, in his first address to Congress since returning to office, praised Pakistan’s assistance in securing Shareefullah’s arrest. “Tonight, I am pleased to announce that we have just apprehended the top terrorist responsible for that atrocity, and he is on his way here to face the swift sword of American justice,” he declared, signaling a renewed U.S.-Pakistan collaboration on security matters.
