A shooting incident at a school and a nearby residence in Thailand’s Nonthaburi province left eight people dead, including the suspected gunman and his grandparents, while more than 30 others were injured, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said on Friday. Nine of the injured were reported to be in critical condition following the attack.
Police were alerted at around 10 am local time after the gunman opened fire at Debsirin Nonthaburi School in Bang Kruai district, located on the northwestern outskirts of Bangkok. Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots on the school campus, with videos from the scene showing the sound of continuous firing.
Authorities identified the alleged attacker as a 14-year-old student who was living with his grandparents. Police later found the bodies of his grandparents at their residence, with investigators suspecting that they were killed before the attack at the school. A handgun was recovered from the scene, and initial investigations suggested that the weapon belonged to the suspect’s grandfather. Police also found a large quantity of ammunition in the student’s bag as part of the ongoing investigation into the incident.

Thai authorities are examining the possible motive behind the attack. Reports said investigators found that the suspect had searched for information related to a school shooting case in the United States on his computer. Officials are also looking into claims that the teenager had been under significant academic pressure.
Prime Minister Anutin said preliminary information suggested that stress related to academic expectations may have contributed to the incident. A friend of the suspect also reportedly told authorities that the teenager had been facing pressure and had prepared for the attack in advance. Anutin said such incidents must not happen again and announced that the government would consider stricter measures on gun control and supervision of firearm ownership. He added that carrying guns in public places should not be permitted except for authorised official purposes.
