Texas Shooting Leaves One Dead, Ten Injured After Wanted Man Opens Fire
Texas shooting leaves one dead, ten injured authorities say.
A wanted man opened fire in the West Texas city of Midland on Friday morning, killing one person and injuring 10 others, in an attack that authorities say came just days after he had already fired at a police officer during a separate incident. The suspect has been identified as 45-year-old Victor Mata Villarreal, who was already being actively sought by law enforcement at the time of the shooting. Investigators said he had previously fired multiple rounds at a Midland police officer during a vehicle chase just two days before Friday’s attack, escalating concerns about his threat level before the mass shooting unfolded.
According to officials, Villarreal began firing at police and civilians in Midland on Friday morning, triggering an emergency response. One person was killed in the incident and 10 others sustained injuries, though authorities have not yet released further details about the victims or the severity of their injuries. Midland Police Chief Greg Snow said officers responded after reports of an active shooter in the area. As police arrived, the suspect reportedly opened fire on responding officers, forcing several of them to take cover behind patrol vehicles.
Some officers became pinned down during the exchange and were later rescued using an armored vehicle, though no officers were struck by gunfire. Police eventually secured the surrounding area and worked to evacuate civilians to prevent further casualties. Officials said the priority during the unfolding situation was to “deny more targets” to the shooter and contain the threat as quickly as possible while ensuring public safety in the immediate vicinity.

A few hours after the attack began, authorities used drone and robotic equipment to enter an abandoned veterinary clinic where the suspect had barricaded himself. Through remote surveillance, officers confirmed that Villarreal was dead inside the building, although officials have not yet disclosed the circumstances of his death. The investigation into both the Friday shooting and the earlier confrontation remains ongoing, with law enforcement agencies continuing to piece together the sequence of events leading up to the attack.
