Tata Steel Sells Jamshedpur FC For Rs 100, Ends ISL Association

Tata Steel has approved the transfer of its entire 100 per cent stake in Jamshedpur Football and Sporting Private Limited (JFSPL), the company behind Jamshedpur FC, to Goa-based Churchill Brothers Sports Club Private Limited for a token consideration of Rs 100. The transaction marks Tata Steel’s exit from ownership of an Indian Super League (ISL) club, although the company plans to continue supporting grassroots and youth football.

The deal covers JFSPL’s 4.08 crore shares and includes Jamshedpur FC’s ISL sporting licence, along with contracts covering 12 players and two coaches. Churchill Brothers will take over those contracts from September 2026. The transaction is subject to approvals from the All India Football Federation and other customary clearances and is expected to be completed by August 31.

The nominal Rs 100 price needs to be viewed against the financial position of the company operating the club. JFSPL reported a turnover of Rs 32.23 crore in FY26, but its net worth stood at a negative Rs 5.8 crore as of March 2026. The consideration therefore represents a symbolic transfer rather than a conventional valuation of a profitable football franchise.

Tata Steel’s decision also comes amid wider financial uncertainty surrounding Indian professional football and the ISL. The league has faced challenges over its commercial model and media-rights revenues. The company is therefore stepping away from top-flight club ownership while retaining its involvement in football through grassroots and youth development, particularly among local and tribal communities.

Jamshedpur has a long association with Tata’s football initiatives. The Tata Football Academy was established in the city in 1987 and, according to the company, has trained more than 300 cadets, with 150 going on to represent India. Jamshedpur FC was launched in 2017 after Tata Steel secured an ISL franchise, with the club subsequently establishing the JRD Tata Sports Complex as its home venue.

For Churchill Brothers, the transaction provides an opportunity to return to the country's top-flight football competition. The Goa-based club has a history spanning nearly four decades and has won the I-League twice. Its acquisition of Jamshedpur FC’s sporting licence and associated contracts gives it a pathway into the ISL while allowing Tata Steel to shift its football focus toward grassroots development.
