Tamil Nadu to Study Ropeway Transport for Key Tourist Hubs

Tamil Nadu is set to explore ropeway transport systems to enhance connectivity and boost tourism in popular destinations like Mahabalipuram, Ooty, and Kodaikanal, with feasibility studies slated to begin soon.

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is spearheading the initiative, following the state’s budget announcement earlier this year to introduce eco-friendly aerial transport at these iconic sites.

The Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC) has also floated tenders for detailed feasibility reports (DFRs) and transaction advisory services for ropeway projects in Yercaud and Yelagiri hills.

Additionally, the National Highways Logistics Management Limited (NHLML) has invited bids for preparing detailed project reports (DPRs) for six ropeway projects across the state, including Parvathmalai (3.2 km), Glenmorgan in Ooty (4.6 km), Kurangani to Top Station (3.9 km), Thoranamalai Murugan Temple (0.5 km), Chathuragiri Hill (4 km), and Tirukalukundram (0.4 km).

These studies will assess land availability, local topography, geological conditions, and connectivity to roads, rails, and airports, while analyzing tourist traffic and proposing tariff structures.

The ropeways aim to ease access to heritage and high-altitude destinations, aligning with the Centre’s Parvatmala Pariyojana, which promotes sustainable transport solutions.
