Tamil Nadu Emerges As Top Solar Power Performer In Southern India Grid

Tamil Nadu leads southern states in solar evacuation amid rising demand and grid expansion efforts.

Tamil Nadu has strengthened its position as the leading solar power producer in Southern India, recording a significant rise in solar energy evacuation, according to data from the Central Electricity Authority (CEA). The state’s growing renewable output comes amid rising electricity demand driven by intense summer conditions and expanding infrastructure needs.

As per the CEA data, Tamil Nadu evacuated 2,186 million units (MU) of solar power in March. This marks a sharp year-on-year increase of 582.94 MU compared to 1,603.08 MU recorded in March 2025. The figures highlight both the rapid expansion of installed solar capacity in the state and improvements in transmission and grid integration systems.

Among southern states, Tamil Nadu remained the top performer, ahead of Karnataka, which recorded 1,806 MU, and Andhra Pradesh, which reported 1,129 MU during the same period. Officials attribute the growth to a combination of higher generation capacity and better absorption of renewable energy into the southern grid. The trend also aligns with increasing electricity demand as temperatures rise across the region.

Tamil Nadu’s peak power demand crossed 21,000 MW in April, placing additional pressure on the grid to balance supply and demand efficiently. On April 28, the state recorded its highest-ever electricity consumption of 470 MU in a single day. On the same day, solar generation contributed 57.34 MU, with current average daily solar output ranging between 55 MU and 60 MU.

Energy officials expect solar generation to grow further in the coming months. Projections suggest that daily solar output could reach around 100 MU during the next summer season, supported by new renewable energy installations and ongoing infrastructure development across the state.

To manage rising renewable integration and ensure grid stability, Tamil Nadu is increasingly focusing on Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). The state plans to make BESS a key requirement in upcoming renewable and hybrid projects, with an ambitious target of developing 10,000 MW of storage capacity by 2030. Officials say this will help store excess solar energy, reduce dependence on conventional power during peak hours, and strengthen long-term grid reliability.
