Tamil Nadu BJP Chief Apologises After Remark on Trisha Krishnan

Tamil Nadu BJP Chief regrets remark on Trisha after backlash.

Tamil Nadu BJP President Nainar Nagendran on Monday expressed regret following a controversial remark about Actor Trisha Krishnan, which drew sharp criticism from leaders across political parties. Speaking to reporters in Tirunelveli, Nagendran clarified that he does not endorse personal criticism and that his comment had inadvertently slipped during a media interaction while responding to TVK leader Vijay’s speech in Salem on February 13.

He added that BJP national women’s wing president Vanathi Srinivasan had discussed the matter with him, and he expressed sincere regret if his words caused discomfort to anyone. The controversy escalated rapidly, with many political figures condemning the comment as inappropriate and disrespectful toward the actor.

DMK MP Thamizhachi Thangapandian, MP Kanimozhi, and Congress MP Sudha Ramakrishnan were among the critics, questioning how a senior political leader could make personal remarks about a woman uninvolved in active politics. They emphasised that public discourse must remain civil and personal attacks undermine democratic values.

Actor Trisha, through her lawyer, issued a strongly worded statement condemning the comment and expressed shock that a high-ranking political figure could make such derogatory remarks. She clarified that she has no association with any political party and intends to remain politically neutral, urging that her professional identity not be dragged into unrelated controversies.

The statement highlighted the need for public figures to exercise responsibility and restraint while speaking, particularly when addressing issues involving private citizens or individuals outside politics. Trisha reiterated her preference to be recognised solely for her professional work.

The incident has reignited debate over accountability and decorum in public discourse, with calls for political leaders to maintain ethical standards when engaging with media or responding to opponents in public forums. The BJP leader’s apology comes amid mounting pressure to ensure such remarks are not repeated in the future.
