Suvendu Adhikari Responds To Humayun Kabir, Criticises Mamata Banerjee In Fresh Remarks

Suvendu Adhikari warns Humayun Kabir and criticises Mamata Banerjee in new political remarks.

Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, issued a sharp warning to Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AUJP) chief Humayun Kabir on Monday, announcing that legal action is being initiated over alleged provocative statements made by the former Trinamool Congress leader. The remarks, made during an Assembly session, also carried a direct political attack on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, further intensifying tensions in the state’s already volatile political landscape.

Addressing the Assembly, Adhikari said that Kabir’s recent comments amounted to incitement and warned that such rhetoric would no longer be tolerated. He stated that two First Information Reports (FIRs) had already been filed against Kabir and indicated that they would be converted into formal legal cases. Adhikari said the state administration would act firmly against individuals making statements that could lead to unrest or violence.

In his speech, Adhikari also criticised Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, claiming that during her tenure, certain leaders were allowed to make inflammatory remarks without consequence. He alleged that the current situation reflected a “weak” leadership approach in the past and asserted that such conduct would not be permitted moving forward. His comments were widely seen as both a legal warning to Kabir and a political attack on the ruling Trinamool Congress leadership.

The controversy stems from remarks made by Humayun Kabir during a public meeting in Murshidabad, where he allegedly warned of retaliatory political action and referred to mobilisation of supporters in a manner that opponents interpreted as threatening. Kabir, who was expelled from the Trinamool Congress in December, has remained politically active and recently won two Assembly seats, later relinquishing one of them.

Kabir’s statements have drawn strong reactions from the BJP, with party leaders raising the issue in the Assembly and demanding a response from the government. Adhikari also alleged that Kabir’s remarks were politically motivated, suggesting they were aimed at influencing an upcoming by-election in the Rejinagar constituency.

Despite the mounting criticism, Kabir has defended his remarks, arguing that they were a response to political attacks and insisting that he retains the right to speak against rival parties. The exchange has further deepened political divisions in West Bengal, where tensions between ruling and opposition parties continue to escalate amid shifting alliances and internal party churn within the Trinamool Congress.
