Student Left Flying Solo After Instructor Jumps Out In Dramatic Training Moment
Flight instructor exits plane, leaving student to fly.
A flight instructor died after jumping from a small aircraft during a training session in central Argentina, leaving his student pilot to land the plane alone. The incident took place in Toledo, Córdoba Province, where 42-year-old flight instructor Leandro Andrés Bertazzo was conducting a training flight with a 22-year-old student named Rosario. According to reports, the instructor was flying with the student when he removed his headset and seatbelt before leaving the aircraft mid-flight. The student recalled that Bertazzo told her, "You know what you have to do, carry on," before making the decision to exit the plane.
The circumstances surrounding his actions remain under investigation, with authorities examining what led to the incident. Rosario was forced to take control of the aircraft and complete the landing on her own. Despite the sudden and traumatic situation, the student was able to safely bring the plane back to the ground. Details about her experience and the exact sequence of events inside the aircraft are being reviewed as part of the ongoing investigation.
Eduardo Álvarez, director of the flying school where Bertazzo worked, said there had been no warning signs that the instructor was planning to leave the aircraft during the flight. Speaking about the incident, Álvarez said Bertazzo had earlier flown with another student on the same day and described the decision as completely unexpected. "He made this tragic decision on board an aircraft with another person by his side," Álvarez said, adding that it was difficult to understand what may have motivated such an action.

He described the situation as a reminder of the complexity of human behaviour and said the flying school community was struggling to come to terms with the loss. Álvarez remembered Bertazzo as a highly regarded instructor and a positive presence within the flying school. Describing him as a "beautiful person with a great smile," he said colleagues and students were shocked by what had happened. The school community expressed grief over the incident while supporting those affected, including the student who was involved in the flight.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding Bertazzo's death, including his mental state, the aircraft's condition and the events leading up to the jump. Investigators are expected to examine flight records, witness accounts and other available evidence to determine what happened during the training session. The incident has drawn attention to the challenges faced by aviation training organisations in ensuring both flight safety and the wellbeing of instructors and students. While emergency procedures allowed the student to safely land the aircraft, officials are continuing their inquiry to understand the factors that contributed to the unusual and tragic event.
