Starmer on Middle East War: This is Not Our War, UK Will Not Be Dragged In

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has firmly ruled out British involvement in the ongoing Middle East conflict between the US-Israel coalition and Iran. Speaking at a press conference at Downing Street on Wednesday, Starmer stated, “This is not our war,” stressing that the UK’s decisions will be guided solely by national interests. While he affirmed the UK would not be dragged into the conflict, he clarified that this stance does not mean the country would remain passive in global affairs. Starmer emphasised the need to safeguard British security, economic stability, and opportunities for citizens’ children. He also highlighted that the UK will act prudently amid mounting international pressure. The statement reflects his broader approach to foreign policy in a volatile geopolitical environment.

Amid criticism of NATO by former US President Donald Trump, Starmer defended the alliance as the most successful military partnership in history. He emphasised the importance of maintaining strong relationships with European allies, particularly during periods of global instability. Starmer said that Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper will lead discussions on reopening the Strait of Hormuz, hosting an international summit to ensure freedom of shipping in the region. The prime minister stressed that navigating such crises requires strategic diplomacy, not rushing into military entanglements. He reiterated his commitment to long-term solutions that protect British interests without escalating conflict. Starmer also warned citizens that challenges ahead would not be easy.

Starmer acknowledged the pressures faced by leaders of key NATO nations but emphasised that decisions must prioritise the UK’s long-term security and prosperity. “Whatever the noise, I am going to act in the British national interest in all decisions I make,” he stated, underlining his independent approach to foreign policy.
