Starmer Confronts Trump on Gaza Crisis at Scottish Summit

UK PM urges US action on Gaza starvation crisis.

In a high-profile meeting at Donald Trump’s Turnberry golf course in Scotland on July 28, 2025, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer pressed the US President to address the escalating food crisis in Gaza amid Israel’s war with Hamas. Starmer, visibly moved, described the situation as “desperate,” highlighting widespread revulsion in Britain over images of starving children. Trump, while acknowledging Israel’s responsibility, cited concerns over hostages but offered no concrete commitments.

The talks, set against the backdrop of Trump’s Scottish properties, also covered a potential Palestinian state, with Starmer advocating for a two-state solution as part of a broader plan, despite US and Israeli opposition. Trump appeared indifferent to the UK recognizing Palestinian statehood. Additionally, discussions touched on accelerating a peace deal for Ukraine within Trump’s proposed 50-day window to pressure Russia, with Trump recently sharpening his criticism of Vladimir Putin.

Trade was another key focus, building on a May agreement that reduced US tariffs on UK aerospace and auto industries. Despite a US trade surplus with Britain, unresolved issues like the 25% levy on British steel and a 10% tariff on Scotch whisky remain contentious. Starmer’s diplomatic approach, including flattery during prior visits, contrasts with Trump’s tariff-driven agenda, though both leaders aim to refine existing trade frameworks.

Starmer’s visit coincides with Trump’s promotion of his new Aberdeen golf course, set to open August 13, amid planned protests in Scotland. The meeting underscored the delicate balance of geopolitics, trade, and humanitarian crises, with Starmer pushing for US leverage to alleviate Gaza’s suffering.
