Stalin Reaffirms Commitment to Global Tamil Welfare in Germany

Tamil Nadu government champions Non-Resident Tamils’ welfare.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin reaffirmed his government’s unwavering commitment to the welfare of the Tamil diaspora during his address at the 'Tamil Kanavu' event in Cologne, Germany, on August 31, 2025. Speaking to Non-Resident Tamils (NRTs), Stalin emphasized that the Dravidian model government stands as a steadfast ally, implementing robust schemes to support Tamils abroad, regardless of the challenges they face.

“The Tamil language unites us across borders,” Stalin declared, highlighting the state’s initiatives to empower its diaspora. The Non-Resident Tamils Welfare Board, equipped with a toll-free helpline and a revolving fund for Tamil organizations abroad, has been a cornerstone of these efforts. Financial aid and pensions are provided to families of NRTs who die accidentally while working overseas. Stalin cited significant rescue operations, including saving 524 Tamils from Ukraine, 253 from Sudan, 126 from Israel, 220 from Bangladesh, and 119 from Cambodia, Thailand, and Myanmar.

The CM detailed specific instances of support, such as Rs 10 lakh for a U.S.-based NRT to bring his child to Chennai for medical treatment and Rs 10 lakh for Mubarak Ali from Myladuthurai, who fell ill in Thailand. Following the tragic Kuwait fire accident, Rs 5 lakh was provided to the families of each of the seven deceased Tamils. Additionally, Rs 10 lakh funded a memorial stone in Thailand to honor Tamil Prisoners of War from World War II.

Stalin underscored the Dravidian model’s inclusive approach, stating, “You have your Muthuvel Karunanidhi Stalin and the Tamil Nadu government to embrace and support you in any situation.” The 'Vergalai Thedi Thittam' scheme, launched in 2023, has enabled 292 diaspora youth from 15 countries to reconnect with their Tamil roots. The 2025 World Tamil Diaspora Day in Chennai saw participation from 62 countries, reflecting the global Tamil community’s strength.

Highlighting Tamil Nadu’s economic progress, Stalin noted his investment-seeking trips to the U.S., Japan, and Spain, urging diaspora entrepreneurs to expand businesses to their home state and corporate professionals to advocate for investments in Tamil Nadu. He also called on the diaspora to support rural education by aiding government school students and underprivileged communities.

The 'Tamil Kanavu' event underscored Tamil Nadu’s proactive stance in fostering global Tamil unity and welfare. As Stalin’s government continues to roll out innovative schemes, the Tamil diaspora is poised to play a pivotal role in the state’s growth, bridging cultural and economic ties worldwide.
