SSB Captures Five Nepal Jail Escapees at India-Nepal Border Amid Unrest

SSB nabs five Nepal escapees at India border.

The Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), tasked with guarding India’s 1,751-km open border with Nepal, apprehended five prisoners attempting to cross into India from Nepal at Uttar Pradesh’s Siddharthnagar district on September 10. The escapees, part of a larger group of over 7,000 inmates who fled various Nepalese jails, including Kathmandu’s Dillibazar facility, amid violent anti-corruption protests, were detained during a routine border check due to their lack of valid identity documents.

SSB personnel, maintaining heightened vigilance following Nepal’s escalating unrest driven by Gen Z-led demonstrations, swiftly took the prisoners into custody and handed them over to local police for further investigation and legal action. “During initial inquiry, it was found that they were among those prisoners who escaped from Nepal jail yesterday,” an official told ANI, requesting anonymity.

The protests, which led to Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s resignation and a nationwide curfew enforced by the Nepal Army, have strained law enforcement, with reports indicating police withdrawal from most posts except headquarters.

The SSB’s prompt action underscores India’s robust border security measures as Nepal grapples with a law-and-order crisis, with the Nepal Army deployed to secure jails and prevent further escapes.
