Sri Lanka President Thanks PM Modi for Cyclone Aid, Strengthens Ties at AI Summit

India-Sri Lanka ties strengthened with focus on AI, disaster relief, and economic cooperation.

Sri Lanka President Anura Kumara Dissanayake met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on the sidelines of the India AI Impact Summit 2026, expressing gratitude for India’s “exceptional support” during Cyclone Ditwah. The leaders discussed ways to deepen bilateral cooperation in trade, culture, and technology.

During the meeting at Hyderabad House, PM Modi highlighted the strong friendship between the two countries and explored collaborations in energy, connectivity, infrastructure, healthcare, skill development, and the blue economy. The discussion emphasized leveraging shared resources for mutual growth and regional stability.

Dissanayake also interacted with other global leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, and Slovak President Peter Pellegrini, focusing on harnessing Artificial Intelligence for global benefit and promoting multilateral cooperation.

The Lankan President underlined that AI must serve humanity while preserving cultural values, stressing that technology should enhance human potential rather than compromise it. Both leaders agreed that responsible AI adoption can strengthen economic and social development in the region.

India has been a key first responder in the aftermath of Cyclone Ditwah, launching Operation Sagar Bandhu and committing USD 450 million toward reconstruction and rehabilitation. Assistance includes restoring road, rail, and bridge connectivity, rebuilding homes, supporting health and education sectors, and strengthening agriculture and disaster preparedness.

The meeting marks a reinforcement of historic India-Sri Lanka ties, with both leaders pledging closer engagement on disaster response, technological innovation, and sustainable development, reflecting a shared commitment to regional cooperation and resilience.
