Squadron Leader Saanya Named IAF’s First Woman Cat-A Flying Instructor

Squadron Leader Saanya creates history in the Indian Air Force.

The Indian Air Force on Monday announced that Squadron Leader Saanya has become the first woman officer in the force to earn the prestigious Cat-A Qualified Flying Instructor (QFI) qualification, marking a significant milestone in the history of military aviation in India.

The achievement was officially recognised by the IAF in a post shared on social media platform X, where the force described the accomplishment as a symbol of dedication, excellence and perseverance. The Air Force also released photographs showing Air Chief Marshal A P Singh felicitating Squadron Leader Saanya for her accomplishment.

In its statement, the IAF said the officer’s success reflected the “relentless pursuit of excellence” and called it a proud moment for the organisation. The force added that her achievement would serve as an inspiration for aspiring aviators and young women seeking careers in military aviation and defence services.

The Cat-A Qualified Flying Instructor category is considered one of the most demanding and respected instructional qualifications in the Indian Air Force. Officers awarded the certification are recognised for exceptional flying skills, instructional capability and operational competence, allowing them to train and mentor future generations of pilots.

The milestone comes amid the Indian armed forces’ continued push toward greater inclusion of women in combat, aviation and leadership roles. Over the past decade, the IAF has expanded opportunities for women officers in fighter streams, operational commands and specialised aviation assignments, leading to several landmark achievements by female personnel.

Squadron Leader Saanya’s qualification is being seen as another major step in breaking long-standing barriers within military aviation. Defence observers noted that such achievements not only strengthen representation within the armed forces but also encourage wider participation of women in highly specialised and demanding professional fields.
