Speaker Gautam Khattar Arrested In Himachal After Remarks Against St Francis Xavier

Speaker arrested in Himachal over remarks against St Francis Xavier

Right-wing speaker Gautam Khattar was arrested by Himachal Pradesh Police on April 24, 2026, following a lookout circular from Goa authorities over his derogatory remarks against St. Francis Xavier during an event in Vasco, Goa. The remarks, made at a 'Bhagwan Parshuram Janmotsav' gathering organized by Sanatan Dharma Raksha Samiti, called the 16th-century missionary a "terrorist and cruel ruler" whose body was "eaten by worms," sparking widespread outrage.

Khattar's viral video led to protests across Goa, with residents, church leaders, and politicians demanding his arrest for hurting religious sentiments and inciting communal discord. Vasco Police registered an FIR under relevant sections, while a non-bailable warrant was issued after he evaded summons. His brother Madhav Khattar, accused of scripting the speech, was earlier detained in Haridwar, Uttarakhand.

Goa Crime Branch plans to take custody soon, transporting Khattar—a self-described "spiritual beat journalist" and Sanatan Mahasangh founder—back for questioning. The controversy erupted on April 18, amplifying tensions ahead of St. Francis Xavier's decennial exposition at Old Goa's Basilica of Bom Jesus, where his relics draw lakhs of devotees.

Political figures across parties condemned the speech, with MLA Viresh Borkar vowing strict action to preserve communal harmony. Organizers issued an apology, distancing themselves from the content. Khattar's history of polarizing statements drew swift interstate police coordination.

This arrest underscores sensitivities around Goa's patron saint, revered by Hindus and Christians alike during festivals. Legal proceedings will test free speech boundaries versus religious offense laws, amid calls for accountability from public platforms.
