SpaceX Launches Starship Test Flight With Most Advanced Starlink Satellites

Starship test flight advances SpaceX's satellite technology goals.

SpaceX’s massive Starship rocket completed another major test flight on Friday, carrying and deploying 20 of the company’s most advanced Starlink satellites during a mission that stretched halfway around the world. The 407-foot (124-metre) spacecraft lifted off from SpaceX’s Starbase facility in southern Texas, marking another important step toward the company’s goal of making Starship a fully reusable vehicle for future lunar and Mars missions.

The flight was closely monitored by NASA as part of preparations for using Starship as a lunar lander for upcoming Artemis missions. The hour-long mission concluded with the spacecraft making a controlled splashdown in the Indian Ocean, where it remained floating after re-entry. The successful return marked a significant improvement compared with earlier test flights, which ended with spacecraft failures during descent or splashdown.

Before launch, SpaceX engineers replaced six of the 33 engines on the first-stage booster after previous engine issues caused a last-second launch cancellation. Although all engines successfully fired during liftoff, the booster later faced problems during its attempted return, with insufficient engines reigniting and causing it to descend too quickly before crashing into the Gulf of Mexico. The spacecraft itself continued its planned journey and released the Starlink satellites at an altitude of about 124 miles (200 kilometres).

The mission represented the 13th flight of Starship and the second test of the newer V3 version of the rocket. While neither the booster nor spacecraft was intended to be recovered during this demonstration, SpaceX said the spacecraft achieved its best re-entry performance so far. Engineers collected important data from the heat shield, including information from sensors and cameras designed to study the extreme conditions experienced during atmospheric re-entry.

The newly deployed Starlink satellites successfully completed their tasks before the spacecraft returned to Earth. Released from Starship’s cargo system, the satellites communicated through laser and radio links, allowing engineers to receive data from each unit. Six satellites also carried cameras that captured detailed images of Starship’s heat shield during the final stage of the mission, helping researchers evaluate the durability of the spacecraft’s protective systems.

SpaceX founder Elon Musk said the mission provided valuable heat shield data, while NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman congratulated the team and said the information gathered would help future missions. SpaceX plans to continue testing Starship before attempting full recovery of the spacecraft using the mechanical capture systems already tested on its booster. NASA requires Starship to become operational for upcoming Artemis missions, while Musk has also promoted the vehicle as a key part of plans for future human missions to the Moon and Mars.
