Strong earthquake triggers tsunami alert in southern Japan
A powerful earthquake measuring 7.1 magnitude struck Japan’s southern main island of Kyushu on Tuesday, prompting authorities to issue a tsunami warning for coastal areas. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said the earthquake occurred in Kumamoto prefecture, with the epicentre located beneath the sea at a depth of around 10 kilometres.
Following the earthquake, Japanese authorities issued a tsunami warning, predicting waves of up to one metre (3.28 feet) in affected coastal regions. Residents living near the coastline were advised to immediately move to higher ground and follow evacuation instructions issued by local authorities. Japan’s public broadcaster NHK reported that tsunami waves of up to the expected height may have already been observed in some areas following the earthquake.
