South Korea’s President Lee Calls For Careful Deliberation On Special Probe Bill

President Lee urges careful public consultation on proposed special probe into alleged fabricated evidence cases.

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has called for careful deliberation and broader public input regarding a proposed special counsel investigation into allegations that he was indicted based on fabricated evidence during the previous administration. According to a presidential official on Monday, the president emphasized that such a politically sensitive probe requires transparent discussion and measured decision-making before any final move is taken.

Senior Presidential Secretary for Political Affairs Hong Ihk-pyo said President Lee made the remarks as the ruling Democratic Party (DP) advances a bill seeking to establish an independent special counsel. The proposed investigation focuses on claims that Lee, who previously led the main opposition party, was unfairly targeted in multiple criminal cases. These include allegations linked to a real estate development scandal, where prosecutors reportedly relied on questionable evidence during the Yoon Suk Yeol administration.

The DP introduced the bill last week, proposing that a special counsel take over several cases that were originally handled by the prosecution. Under the draft, the special counsel would have the authority to re-examine evidence and determine whether the cases against Lee should proceed further. The legislation also outlines a system in which the President appoints the special counsel from among three candidates recommended through parliamentary procedures.

Opposition parties have strongly criticized the proposal, arguing that it could compromise judicial neutrality and effectively influence ongoing legal matters involving the president. They claim the bill could allow selective review of cases and potentially result in dropping charges against Lee. The controversy has deepened political divisions, with opposition lawmakers warning that it sets a precedent that could weaken prosecutorial independence in the country.

Hong Ihk-pyo stated that President Lee has urged the ruling party to carefully decide the timing and procedures of the bill through public consultation and structured deliberation. At the same time, he said the administration believes a special counsel probe is necessary, citing parliamentary findings that allegedly point to unlawful investigations and misuse of prosecutorial power during the previous government. This dual stance reflects both support for accountability and caution over process.

The presidential office’s position is being viewed as conditional support for the investigation while stressing institutional balance. Political observers say the issue is expected to intensify debate in the National Assembly as both ruling and opposition parties prepare for further negotiations. The outcome of the proposal could have significant implications for South Korea’s legal and political landscape, particularly regarding prosecutorial authority and executive influence.
