South Korea Indicts Ex-First Lady, Former Prime Minister

Kim Keon Hee and Han Duck-soo face charges in political turmoil.

In a dramatic escalation of South Korea’s political crisis, special prosecutors have indicted former first lady Kim Keon Hee and former Prime Minister Han Duck-soo on serious criminal charges, sources confirmed Friday. The indictments mark a significant development in the ongoing investigations targeting the administration of ex-President Yoon Suk Yeol, a conservative leader ousted in April and rearrested last month for his controversial martial law decree in December.

The probes, initiated under liberal President Lee Jae Myung’s government, focus on alleged abuses of power during Yoon’s presidency. Kim, accused of leveraging her influence for personal gain, faces charges related to corruption and undue influence. Han, a key figure in Yoon’s cabinet, is implicated in facilitating the martial law decree, which sparked widespread protests and political upheaval. The decree, seen as an attempt to consolidate power, led to Yoon’s impeachment and subsequent legal battles.

Alongside Kim and Han, several high-ranking officials, including Yoon’s defense minister, safety minister, and senior military and police commanders, have already been arrested for their roles in the martial law saga. Prosecutors allege a coordinated effort to undermine democratic processes, with evidence pointing to a network of loyalists within Yoon’s administration.

The indictments have deepened South Korea’s political divide, with conservatives decrying the investigations as a witch hunt by Lee’s liberal government, while critics of Yoon argue the charges expose systemic corruption. Public reaction has been fierce, with protests erupting in Seoul as citizens demand accountability.

As the legal proceedings unfold, analysts predict further revelations that could reshape South Korea’s political landscape. The trials of Kim and Han are expected to draw intense scrutiny, with potential implications for the country’s governance and international reputation. For now, the nation watches closely as the fallout from Yoon’s presidency continues to unfold.
