Six Family Members Shot Dead in Iowa Domestic Dispute Muscatine Shooting

Gunman Ryan McFarland killed six family members before dying by suicide.

A shooting spree that unfolded across multiple locations in Muscatine, Iowa, left six people dead on Monday in what authorities believe was a domestic dispute. Police said the suspected gunman, Ryan Willis McFarland, was later found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound and was pronounced dead despite receiving medical assistance. Investigators have indicated that all six victims were believed to be family members of the suspect.

The incident began shortly after noon when officers responded to reports of gunfire at a residence in the city. Upon arrival, police discovered four victims suffering from gunshot wounds. All four were declared dead at the scene. Authorities said McFarland had already fled the area before officers reached the property.

A search operation was launched immediately, leading officers to a riverfront trail near a pedestrian bridge. There, police located the suspect with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Emergency responders attempted to save him, but he was later declared dead at the scene.

As investigators expanded their search, they discovered two additional victims at separate locations. One man was found dead from an apparent gunshot wound at another residence, while a sixth victim was located at a local business. Police said the shootings occurred across multiple sites, suggesting a planned sequence of attacks rather than a single isolated incident.

The tragedy has deeply shaken the Mississippi River community of Muscatine, which has a population of roughly 23,000 residents. The Muscatine Community School District confirmed that two of the victims were district employees and two others were students. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the domestic dispute, while police officials said further details about the victims and their relationship to the suspect will be released as the investigation progresses.
