Singer Talat Aziz Among Five Treated for Suffocation After Juhu Fire

Short-circuit blaze doused within minutes; all five treated for suffocation have been discharged.

Veteran ghazal singer Talat Aziz was among five people who suffered suffocation after a minor fire broke out at a residential building in Mumbai's Juhu late on Friday night, officials said. The five were taken to a hospital for treatment and were later discharged, police said. The incident occurred at Mittal Park, a ground-plus-five-storey residential building on A.R. Mhatre Road near the ISKCON temple in Andheri West. The fire brigade received the emergency call at 10.56pm on October 2, following which firefighters and other emergency personnel reached the building.

The five people treated after the incident were identified as Talat Aziz, 70, Shahin Aziz, 30, Adnan Aziz, 25, Bina Aziz, 65, and Sikandar Singh, 45. According to officials, all five were affected by suffocation caused by the fire and smoke. They were taken to a hospital, where they received medical treatment. Talat Aziz, Shahin Aziz, Bina Aziz and Sikandar Singh were initially reported to be in stable condition, while Adnan Aziz was admitted to the ICU in critical condition. His condition was subsequently reported to have stabilised, and officials later confirmed that all five had been discharged from the hospital.

The Mumbai Fire Brigade said the blaze was confined to Room No. 12A on the ground floor of the building and covered an area of approximately 10 feet by 15 feet. A senior official from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's disaster control department said the fire was minor and was caused by a short circuit. The blaze was brought under control by 11.58pm, preventing it from spreading to other portions of the residential building. Firefighters used four DCP fire extinguishers and a small house line from one fire engine after the electricity supply to the affected premises was disconnected.

The fire damaged electrical wiring and installations, a sofa, a split air-conditioning unit and other household articles inside the affected room. Personnel from the Mumbai Fire Brigade, police, Adani Electricity and the civic ward staff were deployed at the site as part of the response. The incident was contained without further spread, and officials said no other injuries were reported. The five people who suffered suffocation were subsequently discharged after receiving treatment, bringing the immediate medical response to the incident to a close.

Talat Aziz is among India's prominent ghazal singers and has had a career spanning several decades. Born in 1956, he received initial training in music in the Kirana Gharana before learning from Pakistani ghazal maestro Mehdi Hassan. His career received a major boost in 1980 when Jagjit Singh helped him release his first album, after which he gained wider recognition. Aziz later released several albums and also contributed his voice to film soundtracks, including Umrao Jaan.

Apart from singing, Aziz has worked as a composer for television programmes including Deewar, Baaz, Adhikaar, Ghutan, Sailaab, Aashirwad and Noorjahan. He has also appeared as an actor in films including Fitoor, Fighter and Khel Khel Mein. The latest incident at the Juhu residential building resulted in no reported fatalities or further injuries, with officials confirming that the fire was extinguished shortly after the emergency response began and that all five people treated for suffocation were later discharged.
