Singapore Police Rule Out Foul Play in Zubeen Garg’s Death

Singapore police dismiss murder suspicions.

The Singapore Police Force issued a clear statement on Thursday confirming that ongoing investigations into the sudden death of celebrated Assamese singer Zubeen Garg have uncovered no indications of foul play. Garg tragically passed away in unexplained circumstances while swimming in the sea, shortly before his scheduled appearance at the fourth Northeast India Festival held at the Suntec Singapore Convention and Exhibition Centre on September 20.

Authorities reiterated that the probe is being conducted meticulously and professionally, appealing for public patience and restraint from circulating unsubstantiated theories or misinformation that could hinder the process. The police underscored their dedication to establishing facts through evidence-based procedures without external interference.

Once the investigative phase concludes, all gathered evidence and findings will be formally presented to the State Coroner in Singapore, who will preside over a dedicated Coroner’s Inquiry planned for January and February 2026. This statutory procedure is intended to authoritatively determine the precise cause and surrounding circumstances of the death, with the final conclusions scheduled for public release upon completion.

The clarification from Singapore authorities arrives in contrast to developments in India, where an Assam Police Special Investigation Team recently submitted a chargesheet accusing four individuals—including Garg's personal secretary Siddhartha Sharma and festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta—of murder, intensifying scrutiny on the case.

The differing investigative perspectives have fuelled a heated political confrontation in Assam, with Congress Leader Gaurav Gogoi publicly accusing Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of orchestrating the chargesheet to tarnish Garg's legacy rather than seek genuine justice, describing the iconic singer as Assam's cultural pinnacle and vowing to protect his enduring reputation.
