Sherpa Missing On Everest Found Alive After Six Days Without Supplies
Sherpa survives six days on Everest, returns alive.
A Nepali climbing guide has been found alive on Mount Everest after spending six days missing without food or water, in a dramatic survival case that has stunned his family and search teams. Dawa Sherpa, 52, was discovered near the Everest Base Camp area on June 4 after disappearing on May 29 while descending from higher camps on the world’s tallest peak.
According to expedition officials, Dawa Sherpa had been returning alongside a European climber when he went missing between Camp III and Camp IV, a high-altitude section of the mountain known for extreme weather and treacherous terrain. After his disappearance, search operations were launched, but hopes of finding him alive had significantly diminished as days passed in freezing conditions.
The breakthrough came when a team of cleaners from the Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee (SPCC), responsible for waste management on Everest, spotted a man moving near the base camp region. The team initially saw him crawling down the mountain before assisting him to safety and alerting rescue authorities. He was then transported by helicopter to a hospital for urgent medical treatment.

Rescue coordinator Pemba Sherpa of 8K Expeditions confirmed that the climber had been in extremely weak condition when found. He said the man had been crawling down the slope before being rescued and brought down to safety. Medical teams later reported that Dawa Sherpa was suffering from frostbite and other altitude-related complications but was conscious and stable.
Family members of the mountaineer said they had begun preparing for his last rites after several days of no contact and growing fear that he had not survived the harsh conditions. His daughter, Mhendo Lhamo Sherpa, said she was overwhelmed when she saw him alive, noting that he recognised her and was able to speak, adding that the family was relieved and grateful for his survival.
The case has drawn attention within the mountaineering community due to the extreme conditions of survival at such high altitudes, where temperatures, oxygen scarcity, and terrain hazards significantly reduce survival chances after prolonged exposure.
