Sheikh Hasina Stands Firm On December Bangladesh Return Despite Arrest And Safety Fears

Sheikh Hasina confirms Bangladesh return despite security concerns.

Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has announced that she intends to return to Bangladesh around December despite the possibility of being arrested or even killed upon her arrival, declaring that she is prepared to face legal proceedings and any consequences in her homeland. The announcement marks her clearest indication yet of plans to return after leaving the country in August 2024 following a student-led uprising that brought an end to her administration. In an interview with Reuters, the 78-year-old Awami League leader said she plans to return alongside other exiled party leaders and voluntarily surrender before the country's judicial authorities. Hasina, who has been living in India since her departure from Bangladesh, said she has not held any discussions with the current authorities in Dhaka regarding her proposed return and is prepared for the risks associated with the move.

"They may arrest me on my return, they may even kill me. Still, I have to go," Hasina told Reuters, stressing that she believes returning to Bangladesh is both a political and personal responsibility. Her remarks come amid continuing political tensions in the country, where legal proceedings and investigations involving several former Awami League leaders remain underway. Hasina also expressed concern over what she described as the treatment of Awami League leaders and workers following the change in government. She alleged that members of her party have faced widespread repression since her administration was removed from office and said she could not remain outside the country while her supporters continued to face difficulties.

"My party leaders and workers are being subjected to tremendous repression. If death comes, I want it to come on my own soil, where my parents are buried and where their blood was shed," she said. The statement reflects both her emotional attachment to Bangladesh and her determination to confront the current political situation despite the uncertainty surrounding her return. The former prime minister did not provide an exact date for her planned homecoming or disclose the identities of the Awami League leaders expected to accompany her. She maintained, however, that she intends to surrender before the courts rather than seek any political settlement with the interim administration. According to Hasina, there has been no communication with the authorities regarding the logistics or legal implications of her proposed return.

Bangladesh has witnessed significant political upheaval since the mass protests of August 2024, which forced Hasina's government from power after weeks of nationwide demonstrations. The unrest resulted in a change of administration, while several senior Awami League leaders either left the country or went into hiding. Since then, the country's political landscape has remained deeply polarised, with the Awami League alleging political persecution and the authorities maintaining that legal actions are being carried out in accordance with the law. Hasina, one of Bangladesh's longest-serving prime ministers, led the country through multiple terms and oversaw major infrastructure projects and economic growth during her tenure.

However, her government also faced criticism from opposition parties and rights groups over allegations relating to democratic freedoms, governance and the treatment of political opponents. Her removal from office marked one of the most significant political transitions in Bangladesh's recent history. Her announcement is expected to add a new dimension to Bangladesh's evolving political situation ahead of the proposed return later this year. If Hasina follows through with her plan, her arrival could trigger major legal, political and security developments, as authorities decide how to respond to one of the country's most prominent political figures seeking to return despite the prospect of arrest. The coming months are likely to be closely watched both within Bangladesh and internationally as the situation unfolds.
