Sheikh Hasina Gets 10 Years Jail in Bangladesh Plot Scam Case

Bangladesh court gives ex-PM Sheikh Hasina 10 years jail in Purbachal plot corruption case.

In a major legal setback, a Bangladesh court on Monday sentenced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to 10 years’ imprisonment in connection with a corruption case related to the Purbachal New Town plot allocation scam. The verdict was delivered by Dhaka Special Judge Court-4 Judge Md. Rabiul Alam, following cases filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

The court also sentenced Hasina’s niece and British Member of Parliament Tulip Siddiq to four years in prison. Her nephew Radwan Mujib Siddiq and another niece, Azmina Siddiq, were handed seven-year jail terms each in one of the two cases. The ruling covers irregularities in the allocation of government plots under the Purbachal development project.

Apart from Hasina and her relatives, the court awarded 10-year jail sentences to 12 other accused, while one person received a two-year term. Additionally, five accused were sentenced to five years’ imprisonment in one of the cases. The court also imposed fines of Tk 1 lakh each on 22 convicts, with an additional six months’ imprisonment in case of default.

This conviction follows a series of earlier verdicts against the former Prime Minister. On December 1, 2025, Hasina was sentenced to five years in prison over similar irregularities in the same project. In another ruling on November 27 last year, she was sentenced to 21 years’ imprisonment in three corruption cases filed by the ACC.

Reacting strongly to the verdict, Hasina and her family rejected all charges, calling them “malicious, politically motivated, and baseless.” In a statement issued through the Awami League’s official social media handle, they alleged that the ACC was acting under the influence of an unelected interim government and denied being given a fair opportunity to defend themselves.

The family also criticised the Muhammad Yunus-led interim government, accusing it of targeting political opponents and dragging non-political family members into corruption cases. They maintained that the allegations lack legal foundation and are aimed at discrediting Hasina and her legacy amid Bangladesh’s ongoing political turmoil.
