Shehbaz Sharif And Asim Munir Visit China For Talks On Regional Diplomacy
Pakistan leaders visit China amid ongoing US-Iran mediation efforts.
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief Asim Munir have arrived in China for high-level discussions amid ongoing diplomatic efforts involving the United States and Iran, according to Pakistani state media reports. The visit comes as Islamabad continues to position itself as a mediator in efforts aimed at de-escalating tensions in the Middle East.
Sharif began a four-day official visit to China on Saturday, starting in Hangzhou before heading to Beijing for meetings with senior Chinese leadership. The visit is focused on strengthening bilateral ties as well as discussing regional stability, with Pakistan emphasising its role in facilitating dialogue between Washington and Tehran.
Army Chief Asim Munir, who had recently travelled to Tehran alongside Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, joined Sharif for talks in Beijing. According to Pakistan Television (PTV), Munir has been actively involved in diplomatic engagements linked to ongoing mediation efforts between the United States and Iran, including earlier discussions hosted by Pakistan that brought together officials from both sides.

China has also indicated its willingness to support diplomatic initiatives aimed at reducing tensions in the region. Beijing has stated that it is working with Pakistan to contribute to the “early restoration of peace and stability in the Middle East,” while also reportedly playing a quieter role in facilitating communication between Gulf countries and other stakeholders.
During the Beijing meetings, Sharif reportedly acknowledged China’s support and highlighted Pakistan’s involvement in mediation efforts. He described the current global situation as “critical” and said efforts were underway to keep diplomatic channels open between key international actors.
Pakistan has hosted and facilitated multiple rounds of discussions between US and Iranian representatives in recent months, although earlier negotiations failed to produce a lasting agreement. Army Chief Munir was previously noted for his visible involvement during these engagements, including interactions with delegations from both sides during earlier talks.
Despite continued diplomatic outreach, previous rounds of negotiations have faced setbacks, with disagreements over core issues preventing a breakthrough. Pakistani officials, however, maintain that ongoing engagement and multilateral support could still help create conditions for future progress in reducing tensions.
