Shashi Tharoor Cites Maldives Example to Demonstrate India's Diplomatic Strategy at Fletcher School

Shashi Tharoor illustrates India's diplomatic strategy using the Maldives example and emphasizes trust built through actions.

Shashi Tharoor used India’s relationship with the Maldives as an example of strategic diplomacy and trust-building during a discussion at The Fletcher School in the US. Addressing students and participants, Shashi explained how nations build long-term diplomatic credibility through actions rather than rhetoric, even during periods of political strain.

Referring to recent political developments in the Maldives, Shashi pointed out that President Mohamed Muizzu had campaigned on an “India Out” platform during elections and later cancelled several contracts involving Indian companies after assuming office. Despite these developments and the anti-India sentiment seen during the campaign, Tharoor said New Delhi continued to support the Maldives during times of need instead of reacting aggressively.

According to Shashi, India’s response demonstrated a mature diplomatic approach focused on long-term regional stability and partnership. He stressed that trust between nations cannot be built solely through speeches or agreements but through consistent actions taken during moments of crisis. His remarks were presented as a broader lesson in international relations and neighborhood diplomacy.

The Congress MP, who studied at the Fletcher School earlier in his academic career, highlighted the importance of maintaining engagement even when political relations face temporary setbacks. He suggested that strategic patience and continued cooperation often produce stronger diplomatic outcomes than confrontation or isolation.

India and the Maldives have witnessed fluctuations in bilateral ties over recent years, particularly after political campaigns in the island nation raised concerns about foreign influence and military presence. However, both countries have continued to maintain economic, strategic, and humanitarian cooperation due to the Maldives’ importance in the Indian Ocean region.

Shashi's comments come at a time when India’s foreign policy and neighborhood outreach remain key topics in strategic and academic discussions. His remarks at the US institution have drawn attention for offering a practical example of how diplomatic relationships can be managed despite political differences and changing leadership dynamics.
