Schools Shut in Thane, Palghar Amid Red Alert; Mumbai Stays Open
Thane, Palghar shut schools; Mumbai, Navi Mumbai remain open amid rain.
Heavy monsoon rain and a red alert have created uncertainty over school and college closures across Mumbai and neighbouring districts on Saturday, July 4. While educational institutions in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai are set to remain open, district authorities in Thane and Palghar have announced a holiday for schools and colleges due to the severe weather warning.
The India Meteorological Department has issued the monsoon season’s first red alert for the region, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall at several places and extremely heavy rain at isolated locations. Despite the warning, civic authorities in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai have not announced a blanket holiday. Schools and colleges in these areas will therefore remain open unless individual institutions decide to suspend classes based on local conditions.
In contrast, the district administrations in Thane and Palghar have declared a holiday for educational institutions as a precautionary measure. The decision follows warnings of extremely heavy rainfall and the possibility of flooding in vulnerable areas. Residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel, particularly through low-lying locations that are prone to waterlogging during intense spells of monsoon rain.

The continuing rainfall has affected normal life across parts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, with waterlogging reported in several low-lying areas. Traffic movement has slowed at some locations, while train services have faced delays in parts of the region. Some flights have also reportedly faced delays or diversions because of changing weather conditions and reduced operational predictability.
Civic authorities and emergency response teams have been deployed to clear flooded roads, remove fallen trees and closely monitor vulnerable locations. People have been advised to stay away from overflowing drains, heavily waterlogged roads and coastal stretches. Authorities have also urged residents to follow official weather bulletins and advisories issued by local administrations and disaster management teams before planning travel.
The weather department has indicated that heavy rainfall could continue over the weekend, keeping authorities across Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Thane and Palghar on high alert. Residents have been asked to exercise caution while commuting as the monsoon spell continues to disrupt daily life. For Saturday, schools and colleges remain open in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, while educational institutions are closed in Thane and Palghar.
