School Shooting at Tumbler Ridge, B.C.: Multiple Fatalities, Shooter Dead, Dozens Injured
Shooter dead and multiple victims reported after a deadly school shooting in British Columbia, Canada.
A mass shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in northeastern British Columbia has left at least eight people dead, including the suspected shooter, and dozens more injured, police confirmed on Tuesday afternoon.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said emergency calls began flooding in shortly after 2:15 p.m. local time, prompting an active‑shooter alert and lockdown at both Tumbler Ridge Secondary and nearby elementary schools. Residents first received instructions to shelter in place as law enforcement and emergency responders converged on the small community, which has a population of about 2,400.
By late afternoon, authorities confirmed that the suspected assailant was found dead at the scene with what appeared to be a self‑inflicted gunshot wound. Several victims were located inside the school, and additional deceased individuals were found at a nearby residence believed to be connected to the incident. Dozens of others were injured, with several in serious condition and receiving medical treatment.

Local officials identified significant emergency support was deployed from neighbouring communities to assist with police operations and medical triage. RCMP representatives urged the public to remain indoors during the response and to allow investigators to secure the area and begin their inquiry into the motive and sequence of events.
Tumbler Ridge Secondary serves students in grades 7 through 12, and the community’s officials have stressed the profound impact of the incident on families, students and first responders. Counsellors and support services were mobilized in the wake of the shooting to help those affected by the tragedy.
School shootings are rare in Canada, where gun‑control laws are generally stricter than in some other countries, but past events such as the Dawson College shooting in Montreal in 2006 and the École Polytechnique massacre in 1989 have left lasting marks on the nation’s collective memory. Authorities continue to investigate and are expected to release further details as the situation develops.
