Saudi Arabia Allocates Billions to Strengthen Influence in Yemen Following UAE Pullout

Saudi Arabia has intensified its political and financial engagement in Yemen as it seeks to consolidate influence following a reported reduction of the United Arab Emirates’ role in key parts of the war-torn country. The renewed push underscores Riyadh’s effort to shape outcomes in Yemen’s fragile political landscape amid shifting alliances within the Saudi-led coalition.

According to regional analysts, Saudi Arabia has stepped up the use of economic assistance, diplomatic outreach, and institutional backing to strengthen actors aligned with its interests. This includes increased financial support to Yemen’s internationally recognised government and engagement with local power brokers, as Riyadh attempts to stabilise areas under its influence and counter rival factions.

The UAE, which was a central partner in the coalition that intervened in Yemen in 2015, has in recent years scaled back its direct military presence. Abu Dhabi has instead focused on supporting local forces, particularly in southern Yemen, a strategy that at times diverged from Saudi objectives and contributed to tensions within the alliance. Reports of the UAE being “ousted” reflect a broader recalibration rather than a complete withdrawal, with influence shifting rather than disappearing.

Saudi Arabia’s renewed involvement comes as Yemen remains mired in one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, with millions dependent on aid and basic services. Riyadh has positioned its financial interventions as part of stabilisation and reconstruction efforts, while also pursuing talks aimed at securing its southern border and reducing cross-border attacks by the Iran-aligned Houthi movement.

The evolving dynamics highlight Saudi Arabia’s determination to assert leadership over the Yemen file as international attention focuses on de-escalation and political settlement. Whether Riyadh’s combination of cash, diplomacy, and political leverage can translate into lasting stability remains uncertain, as Yemen’s conflict continues to be shaped by deep internal divisions and regional rivalries.
