Salman Rushdie Attack: Terrorism Proceedings Begin Against Accused In Stabbing Case

The federal terrorism trial of Hadi Matar, the man convicted of attempting to kill acclaimed author Salman Rushdie, began on Wednesday in Buffalo, New York, with prosecutors alleging that he spent years researching the writer's movements before carrying out the 2022 stabbing attack. The case marks Matar's second criminal trial and focuses on whether the assault was an act of terrorism motivated by a decades-old religious decree calling for Rushdie's death. Matar was previously found guilty in a New York state court on charges including attempted murder for the August 2022 attack at the Chautauqua Institution, a renowned arts and educational centre in western New York.

Rushdie was preparing to deliver a lecture when Matar rushed onto the stage and repeatedly stabbed him before being restrained by bystanders. The attack left the Booker Prize-winning author with severe injuries, including permanent blindness in one eye, and required extensive medical treatment and rehabilitation.

While the state trial centred on the violent assault itself, the federal proceedings seek to establish that Matar acted with the specific intent of carrying out terrorism. In his opening statement, Assistant US Attorney Timothy Lynch told jurors that the evidence would show Matar was motivated by the 1989 fatwa issued by Iran's late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.

The fatwa called for Rushdie's death following the publication of his 1988 novel The Satanic Verses, which many Muslims considered blasphemous. According to prosecutors, Matar spent years tracking Rushdie's public appearances and researching his whereabouts before launching the attack.

"Fulfill the fatwa — that's what Hadi Matar intended to do," Lynch told the court, arguing that the stabbing was not a spontaneous act but a deliberate attempt to enforce the religious ruling. Rushdie is expected to testify later this week, providing jurors with a first-hand account of the attack that nearly claimed his life. The defence urged jurors to avoid reaching conclusions before hearing all the evidence.

Defence attorney Nathaniel Barone argued that prosecutors could not definitively prove what Matar intended or what motivated his actions at the time of the attack. "You're going to have to ask yourselves: What was Hadi Matar's intent?" Barone told the jury during his opening statement. He maintained that the government's case relies on assumptions about Matar's state of mind and insisted that jurors carefully evaluate the evidence before determining whether the federal terrorism charges have been proven beyond a reasonable doubt. The defence is expected to challenge the prosecution's interpretation of Matar's writings and online activity throughout the trial.

Federal prosecutors also contend that documents, communications and other materials recovered during the investigation demonstrate Matar's allegiance to Iran's theocratic leadership and the Iran-backed Hezbollah militant group. They argue that these materials reinforce the claim that the attack was ideologically motivated and intended to advance the objectives of the fatwa.

The outcome of the federal trial could determine whether Matar's actions meet the legal definition of terrorism in addition to the attempted murder conviction already secured in state court. The proceedings are expected to draw significant international attention, given Rushdie's long-standing role as a symbol of free expression and the enduring global controversy surrounding The Satanic Verses.

Prosecutors are expected to continue presenting evidence over the coming days as the court examines both the planning behind the attack and the alleged extremist motivations that led to one of the most high-profile assaults on a literary figure in recent decades.
