S Somnath Appointed To RBI Central Board After Distinguished Tenure As ISRO Chief

Former ISRO chief joins RBI board for four years

S Somnath, former chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), has been appointed to the central board of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). He will serve as a part-time, non-official director for a four-year term beginning August 20, 2026, according to an official statement. Somnath’s appointment brings his experience in aerospace engineering, space technology and public-sector leadership to the RBI’s central board. He headed ISRO during a significant period for India’s space programme and was involved in the organisation’s work across launch vehicles, spacecraft and other strategic missions.

The former space agency chief retired from ISRO in January 2025. During his career, he served in several capacities within the space programme, gaining experience in technical development, project management and institutional administration before eventually becoming chairman. Following his retirement from ISRO, Somnath was appointed chancellor of Chanakya University, a liberal arts university located near Bengaluru. His new role on the RBI central board adds another public institutional responsibility to his post-retirement career.

The RBI’s central board is responsible for overseeing the functioning of the central bank and considering key issues related to monetary policy, banking regulation, financial stability and currency management. Part-time, non-official directors contribute perspectives from different areas of public life, industry, academia and professional expertise. Somnath’s appointment comes at a time when India’s economic and financial institutions are dealing with rapid technological change, evolving global conditions and the need to strengthen resilience across the financial system. His background in managing complex national programmes could add a specialised perspective to discussions on institutional planning and technology.

The RBI also reappointed industrialist Anand Mahindra as a part-time, non-official director on its central board for another four-year term. Mahindra, chairman of the Mahindra Group, has been associated with the board as a non-official director. The two appointments were announced through separate official statements. While Somnath brings extensive experience from India’s space and scientific establishment, Mahindra represents the perspective of the private sector and industry.

The central board includes the RBI governor, deputy governors and other directors appointed in accordance with the provisions governing the central bank. Its deliberations cover a broad range of issues connected to the RBI’s operations and its responsibilities within India’s financial system. Somnath’s appointment also reflects the government’s continued reliance on experienced professionals from major national institutions for advisory and oversight roles. His tenure on the RBI board will run for four years from August 20, 2026, unless changed in accordance with applicable provisions.
