Rustem Umerov Meets Ajit Doval And S Jaishankar To Discuss Path To Peace In Ukraine

Zelensky’s top aide meets Ajit Doval and S Jaishankar to discuss path to Ukraine peace.

Ukraine's National Security and Defence Council Secretary Rustem Umerov, a top aide to President Volodymyr Zelensky, met National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Friday to discuss pathways to peace in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. The high-level talks focused on the frontline situation, negotiation progress, and prospects for a just, lasting resolution through dialogue and diplomacy. India reaffirmed its consistent stance prioritizing peaceful solutions amid the war entering its fourth year.

Umerov provided Doval with a detailed briefing on battlefield developments, while bilateral ties and security assessments featured prominently. Jaishankar noted on social media that the meetings covered cooperation between the two nations alongside views on the Ukraine crisis. Umerov expressed gratitude for the "open and substantive dialogue," highlighting implementation of agreements from Zelensky's August 2024 Kyiv summit with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

India's balanced approach—engaging both Moscow and Kyiv—positions it as a potential mediator, as evidenced by recent diplomatic outreach. The discussions come amid global ripple effects, including energy strains felt in South Asia, with New Delhi emphasizing stability in food and fuel supplies. No breakthroughs were announced, but the engagement signals sustained high-level contact.

This visit underscores India's growing role in conflict resolution, building on Modi's calls for de-escalation in Ukraine and West Asia. Umerov stressed mutual understanding on sustainable peace, aligning with New Delhi's non-aligned foreign policy. Outcomes could influence multilateral forums like the UN, where India advocates restraint.

The meetings reflect pragmatic diplomacy amid stalled talks, with broader implications for Indo-Pacific security. As Ukraine pushes for support, India's focus remains on early cessation of hostilities without picking sides. Further engagements may follow, testing New Delhi's mediation credentials in a polarized global landscape.
