Russian Tu-22M3 Bomber Crashes During Training Flight In Siberia Region

Russian bomber crashes in Siberia; crew ejects safely.

A Russian Tu-22M3 strategic bomber crashed during a routine training flight in Siberia’s Irkutsk region on Monday, with the aircraft nosediving into the ground and bursting into flames, according to Russia’s Defence Ministry. The incident sent thick plumes of smoke into the sky, as emergency services rushed to the crash site near the village of Kamenka.

Authorities confirmed that all four crew members on board successfully ejected before impact and survived the crash. Officials said the personnel were taken to a hospital for medical evaluation and were reported to have sustained no life-threatening injuries. The Defence Ministry also stated that the aircraft was not carrying any combat payload at the time of the accident.

Footage circulated by Russian media outlets and security-linked channels showed the Tu-22M3 descending sharply before hitting the ground and igniting a fireball. Additional unverified videos shared on social media appeared to show the aircraft crashing in a wooded area near the Angara River, followed by a large column of smoke rising from the impact site.

Local governor Igor Kobzev said emergency fire crews were deployed immediately to contain the blaze and secure the area. He added that preliminary assessments suggested an engine failure may have caused the crash, although a full investigation has been launched to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.

The Tu-22M3, known by NATO as the “Backfire,” is a Soviet-era long-range supersonic bomber that has been modernised for extended operational use. It has been deployed by Russia in various conflicts, including operations in Syria and Ukraine, and is capable of carrying long-range cruise missiles as well as advanced hypersonic weapon systems.

As investigators continue to examine the wreckage, authorities have not indicated any threat to nearby civilian areas, stating that no ground damage was reported. The crash adds to ongoing scrutiny of Russia’s long-range aviation fleet amid increasing operational demands and reported technical challenges.
