Russian Strikes Kill 17 In Ukraine As Deadly Attacks Intensify Across Cities

At least 17 people were killed and several others injured after Russia launched a major overnight air attack targeting Kyiv and surrounding areas, Ukrainian officials said on Wednesday. The strikes involved a combination of missiles and drones, with authorities warning that Ukraine’s ability to defend against such attacks is being increasingly strained amid the ongoing war. According to Ukraine’s Air Defence, Russia launched 28 missiles, including 24 ballistic projectiles, and 115 drones during the overnight assault. The attack was primarily focused on Kyiv and the surrounding region.

Ukrainian forces said they managed to shoot down 98 drones, but none of the ballistic missiles were intercepted, highlighting growing concerns over the country’s limited missile defence capabilities. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the lack of effective ballistic missile interception systems had contributed to the scale of the casualties. In a statement on social media platform X, Zelenskyy called on international partners to speed up the delivery of advanced air defence systems.

He said delays in providing such equipment or reluctance to transfer anti-ballistic capabilities were contributing to further loss of life and destruction. "Ballistic interceptors are something that could save the lives of those killed today," Zelenskyy said, urging allied nations to recognise the urgent need for stronger protection against missile attacks. His comments came as Ukraine continues to seek additional military assistance from Western partners to strengthen its air defence network and protect major cities from Russian strikes.

The overnight attacks caused damage across several locations, including residential neighbourhoods, warehouses and industrial facilities. Authorities said facilities belonging to Ukraine’s largest retailer, Epicentr K, and the Nova Post delivery service were among the sites affected. The strikes also disrupted civilian infrastructure and intensified concerns over the vulnerability of urban areas. Ukraine’s national railway operator Ukrzaliznytsia said several people were killed while waiting for a train at a regional railway station outside Kyiv.

The incident highlighted the impact of the strikes on ordinary civilians, many of whom continue to rely on public infrastructure despite the ongoing threat of missile and drone attacks. The latest assault comes amid renewed escalation in the Russia-Ukraine war, with both sides continuing long-range attacks despite diplomatic efforts aimed at finding a resolution. Russia has frequently targeted Ukrainian cities with missile and drone strikes, while Ukraine has carried out attacks on Russian military and energy-related targets. Kyiv has repeatedly warned that its air defence systems are under pressure due to the scale and frequency of Russian attacks.

Ukrainian officials have said that while existing systems can intercept many drones and some missiles, more advanced technology is required to counter ballistic threats effectively. The latest casualties have increased pressure on Ukraine’s allies to provide additional military support, particularly air defence equipment. As the war enters another critical phase, the ability to protect civilian populations and key infrastructure remains one of Ukraine’s biggest challenges. The deadly overnight strikes underscore the continuing human cost of the conflict and the urgency surrounding efforts to strengthen Ukraine’s defences.
