Russian Missile, Drone Strikes Hit Kyiv, Injuring 11 As Ukraine Targets Vessels

Kyiv suffers fresh strikes as Ukraine targets vessels.

At least 11 people, including a child, were injured after Russia launched a large-scale overnight missile and drone attack on Ukraine's capital Kyiv early Saturday, Ukrainian authorities said. The strikes triggered fires across several districts of the city, damaging buildings and highlighting continued concerns over Ukraine's air defence capabilities as the war enters another phase of intensified aerial attacks.

Ukraine's State Emergency Service said explosions and fires were reported in Kyiv's Solomianskyi, Darnytskyi and Dniprovskyi districts following the Russian assault. In the Solomianskyi district, a strike caused a fire in a three-storey office and warehouse building, while another warehouse facility caught fire in the Dniprovskyi district after being hit. Emergency crews were deployed to the affected areas to contain the fires, provide medical assistance and assess the extent of the damage.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia had launched 12 missiles of various types, including six ballistic missiles, along with 121 drones during the overnight attack. He said Ukrainian forces managed to intercept most of the drones and some missiles but failed to shoot down any of the ballistic missiles. Zelenskyy again pointed to gaps in Ukraine's air defence systems and stressed the need for additional support to protect cities from repeated missile and drone strikes.

The attack on Kyiv came as Ukrainian forces separately targeted Russian vessels in the Sea of Azov. Ukraine's General Staff said its forces damaged 21 tankers used to transport oil and petroleum products, along with four tugboats, two cargo ships and a dredging vessel. Ukrainian officials claimed the vessels were being used to support Russian military logistics operations, making them strategic targets in the ongoing conflict.

Russian officials gave a different account of the maritime attack, saying one person was killed and that only four ships were targeted. Rostov region Governor Yuri Slyusar said the victim was a sailor on a technical support vessel. He added that the affected vessels, including a tanker carrying methanol, suffered only minor damage. The conflicting claims from both sides could not be independently verified.

The latest exchange of attacks reflects the continued escalation of long-range strikes between Russia and Ukraine, with both sides targeting military infrastructure, logistics networks and strategic assets. Kyiv has repeatedly urged its international partners to provide stronger air defence systems, arguing that improved protection is necessary to defend civilian areas from missile and drone attacks.

As rescue and damage assessment operations continued in Kyiv, Ukrainian authorities said they were working to provide assistance to those affected by the overnight strikes. The Russian and Ukrainian attacks on each other's territory and assets underline the ongoing intensity of the conflict, with no immediate signs of a reduction in hostilities despite continued diplomatic efforts aimed at finding a possible resolution.
