Russian Missile And Drone Strikes Injure 11 In Kyiv, Ukraine Hits Vessels

Kyiv struck in Russian attacks as Ukraine responds.

At least 11 people, including a child, were injured after Russia carried out an overnight missile and drone attack on Ukraine's capital Kyiv early Saturday, according to Ukraine's State Emergency Service. The strikes triggered explosions and fires across several districts of the city, damaging buildings and prompting emergency response teams to conduct rescue and relief operations.

The Ukrainian emergency service reported fires in the Solomianskyi, Darnytskyi and Dniprovskyi districts of Kyiv. In the Solomianskyi district, a strike caused a fire in a three-storey office and warehouse building, while another warehouse in the Dniprovskyi district was damaged and caught fire following an impact. Authorities continued assessing the extent of the destruction caused by the attack.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia launched 12 missiles of different types, including six ballistic missiles, along with 121 drones during the overnight assault. He said Ukrainian forces managed to destroy or intercept most drones and some missiles but were unable to stop the ballistic missiles, highlighting what he described as continuing shortages in Ukraine's air defence capabilities.

Ukraine's Air Force said its defence systems shot down or electronically disrupted two missiles and 111 drones. Officials said direct impacts were recorded at multiple locations involving ballistic missiles, guided air-to-surface missiles and attack drones, while debris from intercepted weapons also fell in several areas.

Meanwhile, Ukraine's General Staff said its forces carried out a separate overnight strike on Russian vessels in the Sea of Azov. Ukrainian officials claimed the attack damaged 21 tankers used for transporting oil and petroleum products, along with several other vessels, including tugboats, cargo ships and a dredging vessel allegedly used for Russian military logistics.

Russian officials gave a different account of the maritime attack, saying one sailor was killed and that only four ships were targeted. Russia's Defence Ministry also said its forces struck Ukrainian drone production facilities in Kyiv and ports in the Odesa region, while claiming Russian air defences destroyed 178 Ukrainian drones over several Russian regions, Crimea and surrounding seas.
