Russian Drones Hit Ukraine-Moldova Border Crossing, Killing and Injuring People

Russian drones struck a border crossing between Ukraine and Moldova in the Odesa region overnight, killing two civilians and injuring three others, Ukrainian officials said. The attack hit the Starokozache crossing, located near Ukraine’s border with Moldova, according to regional authorities. Fires were reported following the strike, adding to concerns over the safety of civilian infrastructure in the border area.

The attack came as Russia carried out another wave of overnight drone strikes across Ukraine. Ukrainian authorities said the border crossing was among the targets hit, while Russia also launched attacks on Kyiv. The latest strikes came amid renewed fighting and continuing Russian aerial attacks across several parts of the country.

The Starokozache crossing is an important route connecting southern Ukraine with Moldova, making the attack significant for civilian movement and cross-border connectivity. The deaths and injuries were reported after drones struck the area, while emergency teams responded to the damage and fires caused by the attack.

Kyiv was also targeted during the overnight assault, with Ukrainian authorities reporting fires in parts of the capital. The attacks followed a recent escalation in Russian strikes after a brief reduction in aerial attacks during visits by US officials involved in efforts to revive peace negotiations.

The latest strikes come as Ukraine continues to seek stronger air-defence support from its international partners. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other officials have repeatedly called for additional missile-interception systems as Russia maintains pressure through large-scale drone and missile attacks. Recent attacks have also caused civilian casualties and damage to infrastructure in several Ukrainian regions.

The strike near Moldova highlights the wider regional risks created by the continuing war, particularly around Ukraine’s western and southern borders. Diplomatic efforts to revive negotiations are continuing, but no major breakthrough has been reached so far. Meanwhile, Russia and Ukraine continue to exchange long-range attacks, keeping civilian areas and critical infrastructure at risk.
