Russia Urges Restraint from Iran Amid US Military Buildup in Middle East

Russia urges Iran and all parties to exercise restraint amid US military buildup and tensions in the Middle East.

Russia on Thursday called on Iran to exercise restraint amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, as the United States has significantly increased its military presence in the region. The Kremlin emphasized that naval exercises being conducted by Moscow and Tehran in the Sea of Oman were pre-planned and should not be a cause for alarm.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, “These are planned exercises and they are agreed upon in advance. Russia continues to develop relations with Iran and in doing so, we call on our Iranian friends and all parties in the region to exercise restraint and prudence.” He stressed that political and diplomatic solutions should take priority in resolving regional disputes.

The US has warned Iran to reach a deal with Washington, with President Donald Trump hinting at potential military action. Several countries have advised their citizens to leave Iran, citing the possibility of armed conflict as tensions continue to rise.

Peskov described the situation as “an unprecedented escalation of tension in the region,” while expressing hope that negotiations and diplomatic efforts will prevail. Recent talks between Iran and the US were held in Geneva as both sides continue discussions to de-escalate the crisis.

Russia and Iran have strengthened ties, particularly in the context of Moscow’s ongoing military operations in Ukraine. The joint naval drills are part of broader defense cooperation and are not intended to signal aggressive action toward other nations, officials said.

Analysts warn that continued military buildup by the US, coupled with close coordination between Russia and Iran, could heighten the risk of regional conflict. Both sides, however, maintain that diplomacy and negotiation remain the preferred channels for resolving disputes and preventing escalation.
