Russia Slams Trump’s Tariffs as Neocolonial Power Grab
Moscow vows BRICS unity against US economic pressure.
Russia has accused the Trump administration of waging a “neocolonial” campaign to preserve US dominance by imposing sweeping tariffs on Global South nations, including BRICS partners. Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova condemned the US for using “politically motivated economic pressure” to undermine countries pursuing independent policies, asserting that such measures cannot derail the “natural course of history” toward a multipolar world.
Zakharova’s remarks follow US President Donald Trump’s announcement of new tariffs targeting dozens of countries, including India, for their trade with Russia. She labeled these tariffs a “direct encroachment” on national sovereignty and an attempt to meddle in domestic affairs. “We are backed by our BRICS allies and Global South partners who share our vision for a fair, multilateral world order,” Zakharova said, emphasizing Russia’s commitment to deepening cooperation to counter “unlawful unilateral sanctions.”
The BRICS bloc, now including Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the UAE, and Indonesia, is positioned as a counterweight to Western economic policies. Zakharova warned that US tariffs threaten global economic growth, disrupt supply chains, and promote protectionism, contradicting the free trade principles once championed by the West.

Addressing Trump’s specific criticism of India for profiting from Russian oil purchases, India’s foreign ministry retorted that its imports were a necessity driven by global market dynamics post-Ukraine conflict, a move initially encouraged by the US. India also pointed out the hypocrisy of nations criticizing its trade while engaging in similar dealings with Russia.
As tensions rise, Russia’s call for BRICS solidarity underscores a growing resistance to US economic strategies, setting the stage for a broader geopolitical showdown.
