Russia Mocks Trump’s Submarine Move: Claims Superior Naval Power in High Seas Clash

Russia mocks Trump’s submarine move, claims naval superiority.

A senior Russian lawmaker, Viktor Vodolatsky, dismissed US President Donald Trump’s order to reposition two nuclear submarines as a response to “provocative statements” by former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, claiming Russia’s nuclear submarine fleet vastly outnumbers and already tracks US vessels in global waters. Speaking to TASS, Vodolatsky asserted, “The number of Russian nuclear submarines in the world’s oceans is significantly higher than the American ones, and the subs that Trump ordered to be redirected have long been under their control. No response from Russia is required.” He added, “Let the two US subs sail, they have been in the crosshairs for a long time now.”

The escalation follows Trump’s Friday post on Truth Social, where he announced the redeployment of two US nuclear submarines to “appropriate regions” in reaction to Medvedev’s remarks, which included references to Russia’s Cold War-era “Dead Hand” nuclear retaliation system. Trump warned that “words are very important, and can often lead to unintended consequences,” signaling a precautionary move amid heightened US-Russia tensions over Ukraine. Medvedev, now deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, had criticized Trump’s ultimatums for a Ukraine ceasefire, calling them a “step towards war” with the US.

Fyodor Lukyanov, editor-in-chief of Russia in Global Affairs, downplayed Trump’s statement, suggesting it was an emotional reaction rather than a concrete military action. “Trump reacts spontaneously. I think the US naval forces read this with great surprise,” Lukyanov told RBC TV, noting that any escalation would depend on whether Trump continues this rhetoric. The Moscow Exchange index fell 2,709.26 points (0.99%) by 8:01 PM Moscow time on Friday, reflecting market jitters over the spat.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, commenting on US Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s stance against direct US-Russia military confrontation, emphasized Moscow’s agreement, stating, “We wholeheartedly concur with this position.” Vodolatsky urged a “fundamental agreement” between Russia and the US to de-escalate global fears of a potential World War III. The incident underscores the fragile state of US-Russia relations, with Trump’s submarine redeployment—whether rhetorical or real—highlighting the risks of nuclear brinkmanship amid ongoing Ukraine-related tensions.
