Russia Hits Ukraine With 450 Drones and 70 Missiles Before Peace Talks
Over 500 aerial attacks target Ukraine’s power grid, worsening civilian hardships on the eve of US-brokered talks.
Russia carried out a large-scale assault on Ukraine overnight, firing around 450 long-range drones and 70 missiles across at least five regions, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Tuesday. The strikes targeted power infrastructure, leaving thousands of residents without electricity and heating amid one of the coldest winters in recent memory.
The bombardment injured at least 10 people and damaged residential buildings, a kindergarten, a gas station, and cultural landmarks, including the Hall of Fame at the National Museum of the History of Ukraine in Kyiv. Ukrainian officials described the attack as a deliberate attempt to undermine civilian morale while diplomatic talks approached.
The attacks coincided with preparations for US-mediated discussions in Abu Dhabi on resolving the conflict, now entering its fourth year. Zelenskyy condemned the timing, stating that Russia prioritized terrorizing civilians over diplomacy, and urged Western allies to supply additional air defense systems.

Kyiv’s power grid suffered significant setbacks, with 1,170 apartment buildings left without heating, according to Mayor Vitali Klitschko. Damage to thermal power plants and substations slowed ongoing restoration efforts, which had previously recovered service to most affected areas.
Beyond Kyiv, Russian strikes hit the northeastern Kharkiv region and the southern port city of Odesa, causing injuries and property damage. Ukrainian authorities reported that the assaults aimed to destroy turbines, transformers, and other critical electricity infrastructure, intensifying the winter crisis for civilians.
As the world watches the upcoming talks, Ukraine continues to emphasize the humanitarian impact of Russia’s attacks and the need for maximum international pressure to end the invasion that began in February 2022. Observers say the assault may influence the tone and urgency of the negotiations in Abu Dhabi.
