Russia Expels UK Diplomat Over Espionage Allegations, Diplomatic Tensions Escalate

Russia expels UK diplomat accused of being an undercover intelligence officer.

Russia on Thursday announced the expulsion of a United Kingdom diplomat, accusing him of secretly working for British intelligence services. The move marks another escalation in already strained relations between Moscow and London, amid heightened geopolitical tensions.

In a statement, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it had summoned Britain’s chargé d’affaires to formally lodge a strong protest. The ministry claimed that Russian security agencies had obtained information indicating that one of the UK embassy’s diplomatic staff was involved in intelligence activities incompatible with his diplomatic status.

“The individual’s accreditation is being revoked,” the ministry said, adding that the diplomat has been instructed to leave the Russian Federation within two weeks. Russian authorities did not disclose the identity or official role of the expelled diplomat.

The UK government has not immediately responded to the allegations. However, such expulsions are typically met with reciprocal diplomatic action, raising the possibility of further strain between the two countries. Similar tit-for-tat measures have been common in recent years amid espionage accusations and political disputes.

Relations between Russia and the United Kingdom have remained tense over issues ranging from the war in Ukraine to alleged intelligence operations and diplomatic confrontations. The latest expulsion underscores the deep mistrust between the two sides and signals continued friction in bilateral diplomatic engagement.
