Russia Avalanche: 11 Climbers Dead, 6 Missing In North Caucasus
Avalanche strikes climbers on Russia’s Mount Mizhirgi, leaving 11 dead.
At least 11 people were killed and six others injured after an avalanche struck a group of climbers in Russia’s Kabardino-Balkaria region in the North Caucasus, local emergency services reported. The avalanche swept down Mount Mizhirgi, one of the highest peaks in the region, at around 5 p.m. local time on Sunday.
The climbers were part of a group of 33 people on Mount Mizhirgi when the avalanche struck. The powerful snow slide swept across the mountain, leaving several members of the group trapped or injured. Emergency teams were subsequently deployed to search the affected area and assist those who managed to survive the incident.
By 9 a.m. local time on Monday, 10 climbers had managed to make their own way down the mountain, according to emergency services. However, the whereabouts of six others remained unknown, prompting an extensive search operation in the mountainous area.

More than 50 emergency workers were involved in the rescue effort, officials reported. Teams were working in challenging conditions as they searched the mountain for the missing climbers and assessed the condition of those affected by the avalanche.
The rescue operation was being hampered by difficult terrain and the continuing risk of further avalanches. The unstable conditions made it difficult for emergency personnel to move safely through the affected area while efforts continued to locate the missing climbers.
Mount Mizhirgi is located in the North Caucasus, a mountainous region that attracts climbers and mountaineers. The latest incident highlights the dangers faced by climbers in high-altitude areas, where steep terrain, heavy snow and unstable conditions can make rescue operations particularly difficult.
