Russia and Ukraine Trade Deadly Long-Range Strikes as Diplomacy Stalls

Russia, Ukraine trade long-range strikes, killing at least 17 people.

At least 17 people were killed on Friday as Russia and Ukraine exchanged long-range missile and drone strikes, underscoring the continued escalation of the conflict amid stalled diplomatic efforts. The attacks struck locations deep inside both countries, including areas outside the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv and the Russian city of Kirov, highlighting the expanding reach of the war.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said a Russian missile strike outside Kyiv killed six people, with rescue operations continuing as emergency workers searched for survivors. He added that dozens of people were reported injured in the attack. Zelensky also said Russian aerial bombardment killed five people in the frontline city of Sloviansk in eastern Ukraine, where fighting has remained intense.

On the same day, Ukraine launched a wave of long-range drone and missile strikes targeting Russian territory. Russian authorities said an attack on a factory in Kirov, located more than 1,000 kilometres from the frontline, killed six people. The incident marked one of the deadliest Ukrainian strikes reported in Russia's interior in recent months.

Ukrainian forces also targeted warehouses belonging to Russian online retail company Wildberries outside Saint Petersburg. The strikes triggered large fires and sent thick smoke into the sky, according to reports. The attacks form part of Kyiv's broader strategy of targeting logistics, industrial facilities and infrastructure linked to Russia's war effort.

The latest exchange of attacks comes as diplomatic efforts to end the conflict remain at an impasse. Both Russia and Ukraine have continued to intensify long-range strikes despite repeated international calls for de-escalation. Civilian areas and critical infrastructure have frequently been affected during the conflict, resulting in casualties and widespread damage on both sides.

The war, which has entered another prolonged phase, continues to exact a heavy humanitarian and economic toll. As rescue operations and damage assessments continue in the affected areas, the latest attacks underscore the persistent volatility of the conflict and the challenges facing international efforts to achieve a negotiated settlement.
